Use U-Concept Pilot size selection template.

U Pilot devices come in 7 sizes. To help you choose the right size, you can use the size template kit, which also contains 7 pieces. The size numbers indicating the size are written on the distal ends of the templates.

Using the size templates:

The basis for choosing the correct size is to match the distal - mesial size (Bolton value) of the teeth.

Always try the template on the upper row of teeth!

As U Pilot is usually used with a well aligned dentition, the teeth will already fit well into the template groove so that the upper incisors are against the inner surface of the outer pellicle of the template and the centre line on the template is aligned with the two individual contact points. Then check, preferably 3 to 3 teeth in, that the notches on the outer pellicle of the template match the size of the teeth. It is important to always look perpendicular to the tangent of the template at the tooth and the marks associated with that tooth, thus avoiding parallax error.

As space is provided for teeth 3 and 4 in the U Pilot, these teeth in particular must be in position in the size template! In case of plaster casts, the determination is easier. This is especially true if the levelling is not yet complete, because measuring the size of the teeth in the mouth is more difficult and more dangerous.

Rather, the posterior (distal) ends of the size template only provide information about the expected fit of the dental arches.

Attention! The U Pilot is not suitable for the optimal treatment of highly congested (e.g. 2/2 dentition)! In case of minor congestion or levelling errors, use only if teeth 3 and 4 can already be guided into the spaces provided for them in the appliance. Once this appears to be assured, the distal-mesial dimensions of teeth 4 to 4 are measured one by one with a caliper and added together to select the correct size pilot appliance based on the size template. That is, measure the size of 1, 2, 3 teeth on one side of the inner side of the outer shell of the template that is expected to be the right size, and if it matches the size of the teeth, then the U Pilot appliance that matches the template will be the right size.

As the size templates can be used for multiple patients, they must be properly cleaned and disinfected or sterilised according to the specifications of the country of use. Like the trainers, the size templates are made of silicone and can be sterilised in an autoclave.

The cleaning procedure:

1. Wash with detergent in water, then rinse 2x in running water. (Grainy abrasive agents should be avoided if possible as they can scratch the surface and thus impair the transparency of the silicone template.)
2. Check cleaning. No visible dirt is allowed!
3. • Disinfection: soaking in the disinfectant prescribed for the place of use in accordance with the instructions for the disinfectant, followed by 2x rinsing and drying.
   • Sterilization: in a steam sterilizer (autoclave) at the place of use, according to its protocol.

Storage of the membranes:

Templates should be stored in their storage box, they do not require special handling. Prolonged direct UV exposure may cause a slight yellowish discolouration, which does not affect their usability as long as the teeth and dimension lines are clearly visible.
